The department is known as the first one to uniquely integrate the specialized fields of civil and environmental engineering in Taiwan. There are eleven faculty members with excellent credentials from leading institutions around the world and will recruit two more faculty in the near future. Our faculty specializes in four main areas: (1) Leading-edge technology in natural disaster prevention, (2) Environmental-friendly remedial technologies, (3) Green engineering and (4) System engineering. Integral and interdisciplinary collaborations among groups and departmental boundaries are highly recommended in our department.
The primary goal of our department is to educate students in the principles and methods essential to the practice and advancement of civil and environmental engineering. By applying and continually developing knowledge, our students are expected to become successful practitioners, innovators, and leaders in serving the needs of a complex society in Taiwan. The specific objectives include:
1. Graduates will be prepared with a solid foundation in both civil and environmental engineering. Graduates will be educated to have an understanding of ethical and societal responsibilities.
2. Graduates will have the necessary qualifications for entry into advanced studies.
3. Graduates will have the ability to pass national examinations, obtain professional licensure, and will recognize the need for engaging in life-long learning.
The department offers the Bachelor of Science degree in civil and environmental engineering and the Master of Science degree. Undergraduate students are asked to earn at least 146 credits, including 50 credits from required courses and 32 credits from general education courses before graduation. Our department offers two programs: (1) civil engineering and architecture program, and (2) environmental and hydraulic engineering program. General concepts and basic theories in civil and environmental engineering are introduced in the freshman and sophomore years. Specialized and professional engineering subjects are taught during junior and senior years with the option to complete a practical engineering project and to write a bachelor thesis. Graduate students need to complete course work (at least 30 credits) including 6 credits of the Master thesis to earn the Degree.
